Revelstoke Mountain Resort Story Ideas 2010-2011

Revelstoke Mountain Resort – On a Natural High

As we enter our fourth year of operations we’re still reveling in the past seasons celebrations! Since opening day on December 22nd, 2007 we’ve experienced a 59% increase in skier visits – growth that exceeded expectations years beyond development timelines and more than likely, records within the ski industry. To date, over $200 million has been invested by our parent company and as the excitement builds toward the 2010/2011 season, we welcome the opening of new resort facilities, the cutting of a new lift line and a continued ‘buzz’ surrounding the resort.

Located in the heart of the Selkirk and Monashee mountains, Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the newest ski resort in Canada and boasts the highest lift serviced vertical (5620 feet) in North America. With a historical area snowfall of 12-18 metres and over 500,000 acres of terrain, our destination is one that is sought after by recreational, professional and passionate skiers from here and around the world. Described as the ultimate ski and ride destination, our heli ski company Selkirk Tangiers is one of the oldest and most respected in Canada, with the world’s third largest tenure. To boost, we’re also the only resort in the world to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing all from one village base.

What’s New!

Worth a toast – Here’s to the second base area dining set to open in 2011 New for this winter Revelstoke Mountain Resort will open a wine bar, the second dining option to be built at the base of the resort. It’s not always easy to impress amongst the cascading mountain ranges in Revelstoke yet, it’s hard to go past this. Picture, a wine bar set at the base of the resort featuring wines from across BC coupled with rustic hearty flat breads and scrumptious après. The design can be described as ‘alpine chic’ as elements from the outdoors collides with the indoors. Indigenous woods from the surrounding slopes flank the walls while plush, yummy furs and wools are used to wrap the soft furnishings…can’t have a cabin without fire, as the glass fire places throughout warm us after a heavenly day on the slopes. The colour palette is natural; utilizing browns, blacks, and whites with a hint of hot pink for an edgy cabin feel. Thomas Edison bulbs are hung randomly throughout the space to create a subdued ambiance of warmth and light, while modern chic antler chandeliers gush from above. The lounge features seating 180.

Lifts Galore – Already boasting an eight person gondola, two high speed quad chairs and a magic carpet, the opportunity to access RMR’s vast terrain is infinite – but not complete… Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s Summer Operations team has been working hard to cut the next lift line for the newest high capacity chairlift, slated to open for the 2011-12 season. Situated off the top of the Revelation Gondola, the new area will also feature new terrain specifically designed for beginners that is expected to be welcome addition to Revelstoke’s epic terrain.

Open Sesame – Another 56 suites open for the 2011 season

Located at the base of the resort is the spectacular Nelsen Lodge, a luxury ski-in-ski-out condo hotel. Designed by the foremost resort architectural firm in North America, Raymond Letkeman and Associates created the Resort in a contemporary mountain alpine architectural style where every suite offers outstanding views across the Columbia River to the Monashee Mountains. Crafted with natural materials that meld into the landscape, the hotel blends inviting natural materials such as leather, granite and rich wood stains offset by stainless steel appliances and brushed nickel fixtures and hardware. The first of three buildings opened in March 2009, phase two will open for the 2010-11 winter season and phase three will open in 2012.

Revelstoke – 365 days a year

Revelstoke is located in the gorgeous Columbia River valley, nestled between two huge mountain ranges, that even on a hot summer day still are snow capped in the high alpine. The town is bordered by two National Parks that are sought after for their spectacular scenery, recreation options (hiking through mountain-top fields of wild flowers, climbing and mountaineering in summer, and backcountry and cross country skiing in winter) and historic significance. The town was established in 1886 and to this day still has a great array of lovely homes that display a range of architectural styles that compliment the picturesque setting. The town itself has a great vibe and is home to funky cafes, great dining and shops, festivals and live music and cultural events. Other recreation options include amazing road biking, downhill and cross-country mountain biking, white water rafting, paddling, rock climbing and hiking through old-growth forests of our temperate inland rainforest. In winter, the area is well known for heli skiing, cat and backcountry as well as ice climbing, and ski mountaineering. The area has numerous natural and commercial hot springs that are great to enjoy any time of year.

Revelstoke on a Plate – Dining in the Mountains

Whether you stop by for breakfast, lunch, après ski or an exquisite evening dining experience, Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s catering does just that, it caters…

The Rockford Wok|Bar|Gill, situated at the base of Revelstoke Mountain Resort, is heading into its second year of operations and following what can only be described as a very successful first year, you could say that the ‘bar has been set’. Important to note however, is the fact that the Rockford is neither strictly a bar nor restaurant; it is a blend of both. It offers an inviting place for everyone and for every occasion where the food and drink are equally important. With the core philosophy of “Love at First Bite”, Rockford’s menu was created and stacked with unique “wok inspired” snack & share plates, enticing entrees, flavourful pastas and traditional west coast appetizers with a Rockford twist. The food proudly announces quality and comfort (with some adventure), reaffirming that “back-to-basic” cuisine with contemporary flavor profiles are indeed very cool!

Of course the town itself also offers many culinary delights with a choice of various eateries; ethnic restaurants, local café’s and some of the best bakery goods around (trust us!). In summer, think fresh and fabulous – The Revelstoke Farmer’s Market is one of the best in the region (May-October) featuring everything from freshly baked bread, newly grown vegetables, freshly picked fruit and authentic, homemade Indian curries. For the more adventurous among us, take your quest for organic and free range to a whole new level in Revelstoke. A short hike in the surrounding mountains reveals an astonishing array of culinary delights from wild huckleberries, blueberries and raspberries to gorgeous mushrooms nestled in mossy forests.

Dawn and Deranged – Understanding why Skiers get up in the morning

Let’s face it, winter – you either love or hate it. For those who dislike the colder weather, it can be hard to understand just what motivates those who enjoy getting up at the crack of dawn to head to the snow. Whether it’s to be the first person in line at the gondola or boast to their friends about the untracked runs they enjoyed, whatever the reason, it’s hard to describe to anyone, just how good being on the mountain feels. For Carol Prince, the magic of the morning comes with being one of the first people on the mountain each day, as the sun rises and the energy of the day starts to build. Carol is one of the faces of RMR who is not only passionate about living and breathing mountain life but also is a leader in a fairly male dominated industry. In summer, she works on the mountain trail crew wielding her trusty brushing saw. Through the ski season, she is Pro Ski Patroller, responsible for recruiting and training volunteer patrollers as well as being part of an elite big mountain terrain management team.
